New Castlebar pool gets thumbs-up from Swim Ireland

THE newly-opened Castlebar swimming pool has hosted its first official swim meet, after which Swim Ireland gave the venue an enthusiastic thumbs-up.

It took place yesterday with special spectator facilities put in place at the Lough Lannagh complex.

All 17 clubs from the Connaught region were in attendance for the unique and exciting occasion.

The state-of-the-art 25 metre, eight-lane swimming pool has enormous benefit to the swimming fraternity in Castlebar and the entire western region.

Swim Ireland is also committed to running some of its other premier events from its calendar at the modern facility.

Afterwards the governing body of the sport announced officially that the Irish Senior Schools Relay/Interpro competition will be held in Castlebar next April.

This is a competition where all four provinces swim against each other to see which province wins the Interpro trophy.

The venue will also host the Regional Gala in November.

Plans are also in place to use the broader facilities along with the pool as a hosting facility for training camps for its next top athletes.
