Trade Union 'distressed' over state of iconic Mayo hotel

MEMBERS of SIPTU's Mayo District Council have expressed 'distress' over the level of dilapidation of the iconic and historical Imperial Hotel building in Castlebar.

The organisation has written to Peter Hynes, chief executive of Mayo County Council, outlining their concerns and seeking an urgent meeting with him on the matter.

SIPTU is calling on the authority 'to immediately decide on its future use in consultation with the people of the county and to commence a refurbishment programme immediately in anticipation of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Irish Land League.'

The Irish Land League, one of the most important movements in Irish history, was founded in the Imperial Hotel on August 16, 1879.
