Death of popular Mayo businessman and building contractor

 

THE death has taken place of Joe (Michael, Joseph) Mulroy, Pontoon Road, and late of Danganmore, Keelogues, Castlebar.

One of the county's best known businessmen and building contractors, news of his passing is widely mourned in the community.

He began his career at Roadstone Limited before establishing Mulroy Building Contractors and was shortly joined in the business by his brother, Sean, as works manager. The firm won the prestigious national House of the Year Award in 1977.

The deceased was the developer of Mayo Leisure Point and Mayo Movie World at Moneen, Castlebar, one of the most popular family amenities in the region.

A former captain and president of Castlebar Golf Club, he also served as president of Castlebar Rotary Club and spearheaded its major overseas charity project in Rustenburg Primary School, South Africa, one of the club's most successful ever initiatives.

Joe was honoured by the national body of Irish Rotary Clubs some time ago in recognition of 35 years of dedicated service to the organisation.

The late Mr. Mulroy served as a steward at Knock Shrine throughout his life.

An outstanding family and community man, he will be sadly missed by everybody who knew him.

He is deeply regretted by his wife Kathleen (Kay), sons John and Michael, daughters Cora, Breda, Veina and Dympna, brother Sean (Castlebar), sisters Eileen (Conlon), Maynooth and Mary (O'Shea), Waterville, Co. Kerry, aunt Tess (Nester), England, daughter-in-law Caroline, sons-in-law Shane, Michael and Paul, grandchildren Naoimhe, David, Laura, Aoife and Ava, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Deepest sympathy is tendered to the Mulroy family on their loss.

His remains will be reposing at his residence on Tuesday evening from 3.30 until 7.30 p.m. Remains will arrive at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, at 10.45 a.m. on Wednesday morning for Requiem Mass at 11.30 a.m. with burial afterwards in the New Cemetery.
