Mayo GAA fans experienced 'traffic hell' on Kerry trip

LOYAL Mayo GAA fans are looking forward to next Sunday's journey to Dublin to face Meath at Croke Park in a Super 8s 'make or break' confrontation at 2 p.m.

The road trip will be far less arduous and frustrating than last weekend's one to Killarney.

Supporters experienced delays in a number of towns along the route including Adare, Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale while there was serious congestion on the final stretch from Farrafore to Killarney, the situation compounded by a traffic accident along the route.

Fans travelling by coach were diverted away from the town and had to walk up to two miles to Fitzgerald Stadium.

And, having sat through a disappointing Mayo defeat in very hot weather conditions, they faced the same ordeal on the way home.

A supporter who contacted The Connaught Telegraph stated: “It was pure hell.”

The problems have opened a debate on the GAA's decision to bring games in the Super 8s to parts of the county where traffic congestion is unavoidable.

Gardaí in Mayo will face a major organisational challenge when Elvery's MacHale Park hosts Super 8s match between Mayo and Donegal on August Bank Holiday weekend and parrticularly so if James Horan's charges get back on track against Meath next Sunday.
