Minister Ring cutting the red tape at the phase one opening of the Bowers Walk enhancement.

Ballinrobe’s Bowers Walk on Sky TV

A SPECIAL programme on the Bowers Walk in Ballinrobe will be broadcast on Henry McGlade’s iMayo TV on Sky TV on Thursday, September 12.

Recent government funding for the development of this stunning riverside walk has enhanced what was already a spectacular walking route.

Anna Connor, Mayo County Council’s tourism development officer, said: “We are delighted that this walk has been upgraded. It will enhance Ballinrobe and south Mayo’s tourism offering.

Walking holidays are extremely popular in Ireland right now and whether it’s local people enjoying a local amenity, or visitors coming to Ballinrobe to enjoy this fabulous walking route, the Bowers Walk offers a lovely option for anyone looking to get out in the fresh air and stretch their legs.”

Henry attended the official opening of phase one of the development of the walk which was performed by Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring.

The development of the Bowers Walk is part of major redevelopment works that are taking place in and planned for Ballinrobe town, including the development of the town hall, enhancements to the library grounds to create town centre space, and other initiatives that will be rolled out to encourage more people to live in the town centre.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Ring said: “This is rural regeneration at its best. This funding announced and the previous funding which was announced will prove invaluable to the town of Ballinrobe.”

The Bowers Walk stretches for approximately three kilometres along the River Robe, starting at the bridge on Bridge Street towards Creagh Bridge. It is a beautiful walkway, passing by stone walls, trees and then under a metal bridge, followed by a two-bay cut stone bridge. Another metal bridge is crossed at the weir following along by the banks of the canal towards the Springvale Bridge. You can see the town skyline, the back of the Court House, and the old Rectory, as you meander along this beautiful walk.

It is hoped that in the future the famous Tochar Valley Walk will be extended out to Ballinrobe town and incorporated into the Bowers Walk.

The special programme will be broadcast on Sky Channel 192 and Freesat 161 on Thursday, September 12, at 7 p.m. with a repeat on Saturday, September 14, at 8 p.m., and again on Tuesday, September 17, at 12.30 p.m.
