Mayo's double success at National Enterprise Town Awards

MAYO has accomplished a double triumph at the Bank of Ireland National Enterprise Town Awards in Kilkenny tonight.

Castlebar scooped the prestigious Rising Star accolade in recognition of the town's commitment to community, retail and tourism development.

The prestigious prize comes with the added bonus of €20,000 to be invested in community projects.

John Mulroy, president, Castlebar Chamber of Commerce, said he was thrilled and thanked everybody who contributed to the success.

"It's a resounding vote of confidence in the county town," he added.

There was also brilliant news for Belmullet, winners of the Enterprise Town Awards in Connaught/Ulster region for towns with a population of less than 2,000.

Padraig Brogan of Belmullet Municipal District paid tribute to all those who helped achieve the success.

John Magee, acting director of enterprise and investment services, Mayo County Council, was in attendance at the awards ceremony.

The adjudication took place in both Mayo towns last September.
