CARNACON put their off-field problems to one side as they overwhelmed Knockmore in the county ladies senior football championship final in St. Brendan's Park, Kilmeena, this afternoon.

This latest victory for the Mayo kingpins made it a great 24 hours for the local area as the men's senior side regained the Moclair Cup on Saturday night in Elverys MacHale Park, Castlebar.

Despite having to play without two of their star players, Fiona McHale and Doireann Hughes, Carnacon were still able to produce a breathtaking performance before coming out on top by a massive 33 points on a scoreline of 9-10 to 0-4.

This final was long decided before the opening half ended as Carnacon took a commanding lead early on, despite playing into a very strong wind, with goals from Amy Dowling and Erina Flannery.

By half-time they had extended their lead to 12 points, 4-2 to 0-2, after Flannery, for the second time, and Cora Staunton found the back of the net.

Knockmore's two points in the first half were scored by Shauna Howley and Amy O'Connor.

On the resumption, Carnacon continued to dominate and rack up the scores. Louise Dowling, Staunton, Aoife Breenan and corner-back Sadhbh Larkin all scored goals in the third quarter, while Staunton also scored three points.

Ten minutes from time corner-forward Erina Flannery scored a ninth goal, which was her third of the game.

In the end it was all very easy for the reigning champions, with Cora Staunton giving another player of the match performance.

Great credit must also go to Knockmore, who battled very hard to the bitter end in what was a very sporting game in front of a massive attendance.
