Cillian Melly being presented with the Darragh Doherty Memorial Cup

Cillian Melly is the Darragh Doherty Memorial Cup winner

The overall male Mayo Young Sports Star of the Year Award 2018 goes to swimming sensation Cillian Melly.

His achievement of three national titles in five events at Irish Short Course Swimming Championships in Lisburn last December really caught the eye of the adjudication panel, chaired by Martin Carney.

Representing the National Centre Limerick, he secured wins in the 200m butterfly, 400m individual medley, and 200m backstroke, while he took home bronze in the 100m butterfly and finished fourth in the 200m individual medley, setting a plethora of Connaught records in the process.

All this was secured after he sustained serious injury a few years ago. His achievements can only be regarded as phenomenal.

As The Connaught Telegraph Male Sports Star of the Year, Cillian takes home the Darragh Doherty Memorial Cup. Well done Cillian!
