Extra-time heartbreak for brave United

Westport United .... 1

(After extra time)

Westport United's brilliant run in the New Balance FAI Junior Cup has ended.

After coming from behind after the first half with a well-taken Mikey O'Brien equaliser, they lost out to an extra-time winner by the Limerick club.

United received a pre-match boost when experienced midfielder Dave Cameron was declared fit to play alongside Darren Browne and O'Brien.

Interim manager Padraig Burns selected a strong attacking formation with Philip Keegan and Peter Corcoran flanking the combative David Hoban upfront.

The Westport sporting public also turned out in big numbers to support the team at United Park, overlooked by a snow-topped Croagh Patrick.

But they were rocked back on their heels when the visitors took a first half lead, a reward for their industry and energy.

United snatched the equaliser they deserved early in the second half when O'Brien turned up at the right place at the right time to make it 1-1.

The game look destined to turn in United's favour at that point but Aisling Annacotty had other ideas.

Elsewhere, Castlebar Celtic advanced to the quarterfinals of the Connacht Cup with a 4-2 win over Strand Celtic in Sligo.

Jordan Loftus struck twice for the Hoops with Ben Murphy and Jason Hunt, from the penalty spot, getting the other goals.

Ballina Town booked their quarterfinals of the same competition with a 4-2 win over Claremorris, the goals being scored by Dylan Edwards (2), Duane Helly and Stephen Melvin.

And joining Celtic and Town in the draw is Manulla, 4-0 winners over Maree Oranmore with goals by Shea Benson (2), Gerry Canavan and Enda McGahon.
