Ready to play the new holes at Castlebar Golf Club.

Golfers tee off on new holes at Castlebar course

FRIDAY last saw some of the new holes at Castlebar Golf Club opened for play for the first time as phase one of the reconfiguration of the course.

On the day the club held a scramble competition for members to acquaint themselves with the new holes.

Geoff Howes, architect, and DAR Construction have come up with a spectacular course. The greens are no doubt among the very best in Ireland and the fairways are set among mature woodland.

There are three new par 4s, one par 5 and the feature 'fairy fort' par 3 played over a newly constructed lake.

Pictured prior to teeing off on the new front nine layout at Castlebar were, from left, Enda Lonergan (executive secretary, Connacht Branch GUI), Jim McGovern (president, GUI), Gerry O'Malley (Castlebar Golf Club captain 2019) and John MacDonagh (council member, Connacht Branch, GUI).
