Gardaí in Castlebar want to trace the occupants of a black Vauxhall hatchback car.

Safe stolen in daylight mayo breakin

A safe has been stolen in a break-in during daylight to the home of a prominent Castlebar business couple.

The safe mostly contained documentation but also held a small amount of cash.

The thieves gained entry to the house at Rathbawn Avenue between 11.15 a.m. and 12.55 p.m. on Wednesday last by breaking the glass in a back door.

The property was unoccupied at the time. The man of the house was working and his wife had slipped out to Mass in the local Church of the Holy Rosary.

Investigating gardaí said they are following a certain line of enquiry.

They would particularly like to trace the occupants of a black Vauxhall hatchback car which was seen being driven suspiciously in the Rathbawn area around the time of the break-in.

The vehicle had a Kerry registration but the plates fitted may have been false ones.

Gardaí at Castlebar (094-9022222) say they would welcome information about vehicles or individuals acting suspiciously in the Castlebar area around the time of the break-in.

They have also highlighted the continued importance of community alert in preventing and detecting criminal activity in neighbourhood areas.
