Irish water dealing with ballina burst

IRISH Water has confirmed that about 2,000 homes and businesses in Ballina have been affected by a major water burst yesterday morning – the second such burst in less than a week.

The first incident occurred last Thursday when a section of the Ballina water mains burst, causing extensive flooding damage to a number of homes and businesses in the Lower Bridge Street and Ridgepool area.

Irish Water carried out repairs but the same section of the mains burst again overnight.

One business owner opened the door of her office yesterday morning to find the premises under water again for the second time in less than a week.

A crew has been on site carrying out further temporary repairs, but the company says this section of the mains must be replaced.

A spokesman for Irish Water confirmed the company is progressing plans to replace 700 metres of the mains network in the town.

The works will cost in the region of €700,000 and the replacement project will cause some disruption to traffic and business in the town.
