Castlebar deemed 'littered' in new survey

THE latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) shows Castlebar in joint 35th position in the ranking of 40 towns and cities and deemed “littered”.

In last year’s ranking the town was judged to be ‘clean’ in 23rd position nationally.

The study, conducted by An Taisce, showed only two of 25 towns surveyed to be littered. . .and Castlebar is one of them.

The An Taisce report on Castlebar stated: “A disappointing result for Castlebar. The recycle facility at Tesco/Dunnes Stores had improved somewhat since it was last included in IBAL Litter Survey but was still a littered site.

'A couple of the moderately littered sites in Castlebar (N5 Westport Approach Road and R311 Newport Road) were both brought down by the litter associated with abandoned/disused properties. Market Street was attractively presented but let down by high levels of litter.”
