One Mayo Olympian to honour another

RIO Olympian swimmer Nicholas Quinn of Castlebar is to honour the late, great Olympian Martin Sheridan of Bohola.

Quinn will lay a wreath at the Sheridan Memorial in Bohola on Tuesday next, December 20, at 2.45 p.m.

Prior to the ceremony, Nicholas will visit Bohola National School where he will meet with the teaching staff and pupils and later plant a tree to celebrate the occasion.

Martin John Sheridan was a five-time Olympic gold medalist and won a total of nine Olympic medals during his career in the US.

Sheridan was called 'one of the greatest figures that ever represented America in international sport.'

He died on March 27, 1918, on his 37th birthday,  a very early casualty of the 1918 flu pandemic.
