New wing planned for 800-year-old Mayo abbey

WORKS are expected to start later this year on the reconstruction of the east wing of Ballintubber Abbey.

The new wing is to be built over the ruins of the east range.

The design by Howley Hayes Architects includes a stairs, lift, roofed cloister passage, reception area and office, toilet and indoor facilities, changing room for pilgrims, museum and exhibition centre, audio visual room and kitchenette.

Ballintubber Abbey last year celebrated its 800th annivesary of continuous Mass and religious services.
