Two Mayo senators support Leo Varadkar in FG leadership battle

TWO Mayo Fine Gael senators have announced they are backing Minister Leo Varadkar in the party's leadership battle.

Paddy Burke and Michelle Mulherin were part of a nine-strong group of senators to declare their support for the Dublin-based TD earlier this afternoon.

Senator Burke told The Connaught Telegraph he regarded Minister Varadkar as the best representative to bring the party forward ahead of the next general election.

'I believe our party, with Leo Varadkar as leader, will attract a stronger vote in the higher population areas. He is best placed to bring Fine Gael into a new era.'

Senator Burke paid tribute to outgoing leader, Taoiseach Enda Kenny, for his outstanding work for the party over the past 15 years.

'I am convinced that history will judge him kindly for the contribution he made,' added Paddy.

Mayo's third Fine Gael senator, John O'Mahony, is reported to be backing Minister Simon Coveney for the post.

Minister of State Michael Ring and Taoiseach Enda Kenny have yet to announce who they are backing in the contest.
