Rochford: Mayo presented with a massive challenge - and opportunity

MAYO manager Stephen Rochford has confirmed that two of the three players injured in last Saturday's All-Ireland SFC semi-final replay victory over Kerry will return to training at Elverys McHale Park, Castlebar, this evening.

Colm Boyle suffered an achilles tear in the encounter while Donal Vaughan and Diarmuid O'Connor both pulled hamstrings.

Speaking at last night's Mayo GAA press night ahead of the All-Ireland SFC final against Dublin, Rochford confirmed Boyle and Vaughan are fit to return to squad training today while O'Connor will make his return early next week.

He is satisified the fitness of all three players does not present a probem ahead of the final against Dublin on September 17.

The Ballinrobe-based boss was in a relaxed mood as he responded to questions on a range of issues.
Asked what he thought of Dublin-manager Jim Gavin's remarks that he had not seen Mayo play since meeting them in the National League earlier this year, Rochford admitted it was no different for him.

“In fairness to Jim, I think he probably meant that he was not at any of our games. It was the same for me, to be honest, until I saw their win over Tyrone at Croke Park last Sunday. I had previously viewed their displays on TV.

“It was an impressive win for them and they are a skilful outfit. They controlled the game from the off. There are going for three-in-a-row and many observers believe their are the greatest football team ever to grace the sport. It's hard to argue with that. But, in that, we are presented with a massive challenge and a massive opportunity."

Rochford spoke about the importance of the GAA getting the appointment of the match referee right, but that such decisions are out of his control.

“Some calls went against us last year that shaped the game. The blatant hand trip by John Small that was missed was one thing. When that happens in a game of such narrow margins, it makes a difference.

“The Lee Keegan black card is still difficult to deal with in view of the publicity he got on the lead-up to the match,” he elaborated.
