Doohoma Post Office

Mayo Post offices falling like dominos - Chambers

MAYO Fianna Fáil TD Lisa Chambers has called on the Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring to intervene and stop the closure of Doohoma Post Office.

The Castlebar-based representative stated: “It’s sad to see yet another post office closure and the lack of understanding from government on what this means to a rural community such as Doohoma. Tomorrow it will be somewhere else, until we have very few post offices left.”

“This is yet another issue to add to a long list of how this Government has pillaged rural Ireland. They need to intervene and protect the postal network and rural Ireland sooner rather than later,” she stated.

“The post network is being treated like a business rather than a public service. If every service in rural Ireland is judged on the basis of profits then we may as well close rural Ireland tomorrow.

"Rural communities are entitled to the support from government just as much as urban communities. The systematic closure of post offices across our communities highlights the lack of connection this government has with rural Ireland,” she continued.

“I’m calling on the Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring to use his influences to safe guard what is left of the postal network in rural Ireland and to insure we see no further closures to our post offices.

“The responsibility lies with Minister Ring and his new department of Rural and Community Development. He must use his influence at the cabinet table to ensure the voice of rural Ireland is heard and listened to,” she added.
