Call on public to engage in consultation on Ardnaree Post Office

MAYO Fine Gael Senator Michelle Mulherin has called on local communities to make their case for Ardnaree Post Office to remain open.

The current post master of Ardnaree Post Office is set to retire shortly after many years of sterling service to the people of the area by himself and his staff.

At that juncture the contract with An Post will finish, and there is a real threat of the post office services being discontinued in the area and centralised to Ballina Post office.

An Post has begun a public consultation that will run until January 26.

There is a petition which can be signed at the post office and the shop attached. A public meeting is also being arranged for Friday night on the topic.

Senator Mulherin said: “It is very important for communities in Ardnaree, Bunree, Greenhills, the Bonniconlon road, Sligo Road and to the many people living east of the River Moy in Ballina that this post office is not lost and the service remains in the community.

“I have been contacted by many concerned locals and it is very important that as many people as possible, who would be affected by any possible decision to close, make their views known through this process.

“The future of the post office is under threat and we must make a stand together against this.

“It is my view that the possible alternative of centralising all services to Ballina would not work as Ballina is already extremely busy and wouldn't have sufficient capacity.”
