Mayo County Council pays tribute to 'gentleman' Brendan

HONEST. Forthright. Humorous. Eloquent. Family man. A gentleman.

Some of the adjectives used at the March meeting of Mayo County Council to describe the late former Mayo of Castlebar, Brendan Henaghan.

Mr. Henaghan (53) died at Mayo University Hospital on February 20 after suddenly taking ill two days earlier at his home in Snugboro.

Councillor Henry Kenny, a Fine Gael party colleague during Mr. Henaghan's time as an elected member of the old Castlebar Town Council, led the tributes.

He expressed his deepest sympathy to Brendan's widow, Trish, his sons Tom, Colm and John. and his mother, Carmel.

Councillors Cyril Burke (FG), Blackie Gavin (FF), Michael Kilcoyne (Ind), Frank Durcan (Ind) and Al McDonnell (FF) joined in the tributes.

Councillor McDonnell remarked that Brendan's untimely death had cast a dark shadow over the town.

Associating himself with the tributes, council chief executive Peter Hynes said Brendan had been held in high regard by all council staff.

He went on to describe him as “a gentleman who brought humour and insight” to all meetings in which he participated.
