Ombudsman for Children officially opens new school in Mayo

THE Ombudsman for Children, Niall Muldoon, has performed the official opening of the new Castlebar Education Together National School at Marsh House, Newtown, Castlebar.

In his address, he paid tribute to Educate Together, the Department of Education, Mayo County Council and local parents for their oustanding work in converting one of Castlebar's most historic buildings into a state-of-the-art primary school for the community.

He praised Educate Together for making children fully aware of their rights, something that will stand them in good stead throughout their lives.

Mr. Muldoon encouraged children to enjoy their school years and always be prepared to laugh and enjoy themselves.

“We learn better when we are happy,” he explained.

He also encouraged pupils to speak up when they are hurt or sad and speak up for others who may be experiencing those feelings at times.

Sarah Calvey, principal, said the children always come first at Castlebar Educate NS and that was the main reason why the school invited the Ombudsman for Children to perform the official opening.

“We encourage our pupils to be creative and learn to collaborate with others in their work. The skills needed for modern living form a key part of our curriculum.”

The school first opened in September 2016 at Cavendish Lave in the town and enrollment grew to 32 after moving to Marsh House last September. The number of students is expected to grow to 55 by next September.

“We will soon outgrow our new school and will be seeking help in providing a new facility in the years ahead,” she stated.

She reserved special words of thanks for parents for their input into the school's ongoing development.

Yvonne Coyne, chairperson of the board of management, said the values of Educate Together are equality based, co-educational, child centred and democratic.

She praised Ms. Calvey and her teaching staff for their brilliant work and achievements over a short period of time.

“We have forged a lot of new partnerships in the town, be it with other schools and businesses. Our children are now a central part of the community.”

The chief executive officer of Educate Together, Paul Rowe, said the organisation is delighted with the success of Castlebar Educate Together NS, which is a credit to everybody concerned.

He said it will continue to grow over the coming years, offering parents a diversity of education choices.

“It's fantastic to see the school's development in the space of two years and I extend congratulations and best wishes for the future.”

He announced that Education Together, which was founded 40 years ago, planned to open a school in Westport later this year.
