Funding set for Castlebar dementia centre to end of year

ARRANGEMENTS have been agreed with the HSE to allow for the continuation of services at Alzheimers Society's Day Care Centre in Castlebar.

The centre, which is located at Gladesville in the town, had been threatened with downgrading from June 4. This would have meant that services would only have been available on three instead of five days.

Now, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne, one of the campaignrs for the retention of full services at the centre, has been informed that services are to fully continue and there will be no job losses.

According to a letter sent to Councillor Kilcoyne by Tina Leonard of the Alzheimers Society of Ireland (ASI), funding is now set for the rest of the year.

Ms. Leonard says that both the ASI and the HSE will examined the priorities for the development of dementia-specific services based on the findings of a recently publiswhed mapping project.

While welcoming the continuation of alzheimer services in Castlebar Councilllor Kilcoyne called for a firm commitment on the long term future of the Castlebar facility.
