Call for release of Leigue Cemetery funds
A CALL has been issued on Mayo County Council to release funding to the Friends of Leigue in Ballina so that essential upkeep work is carried out.
Local Senator Michelle Mulherin said the Friends of Leigue does tremendous work on the upkeep of Leigue Cemetery.
The group formed 18 years ago and the volunteers have worked continuously since then to ensure that the cemetery is kept clean and tidy. Their work is very much appreciated by people who have loved ones buried there.
She outlined: “The group is dependent on Mayo County Council to provide it with funding of €20,000, which is paid annually. Funding is also provided through donations from the public.
“Unfortunately, the council has withheld funding this year and the Friends of Leigue are unable to fund their very worthwhile work. Because of this, the excellent work that has been carried out over the years may become undone. This is very upsetting for everyone involved.
“The issue has taken on a new urgency on account of the annual mass in Leigue Cemetery, which will be held on June 24. The regular upkeep work will need to be carried out before then to return the grounds to their normal condition.
“I am calling on the chief executive of Mayo County Council to put this matter right by releasing the funds immediately. My Fine Gael colleagues on the council, councillors John O'Hara, Jarlath Munnelly and Neil Cruise, are well aware of the frustration and upset the situation is causing and are supportive of ending the impasse without further delay.”
