Local firemen sign up for novel football fundraiser

FIRE fighting crews in Mayo will become rivals – for one hour at least – when they go head to head in a charity football tournament this Friday evening.

Castlebar Fire Service are taking on 'rivals' Mayo Fire Service in a 24-hour five-a-side football marathon. They will kick off the fun tournament at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Ballyheane astropitch. The marathon continues right through until 7 p.m. on Saturday. Slots are still available for teams to enter this family fun event and everyone can play – young and not so young - for as long as you wish, or just come along and cheer from the sideline.

On Saturday a fantastic local startup food truck - The Fire Slice – will be there selling gourmet wood-fired pizzas from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The tournament is a fundraiser for Aisling McDonagh who is seeking treatment for Lyme Disease in Germany (https://www.gofundme.com/aisling-mcdonagh-lyme-disease-fund).

Pictured by Christy Lawless at Castlebar Fire Station are friends and family of Aisling along with firefighters from Castlebar Fire Station. They have extended thanks to the Castlebar Fire Service and Councillor Blackie Gavin for their generosity and support towards the event.

A special thanks to Jason Keane, Mervyn Fitzgerald, Adrian O’Leary and all the crew at the station who launched the 24-hour football marathon.
