€157,000 for new Westport tennis clubhouse

MINISTER Michael Ring has today announced €157,770 in funding through the LEADER Programme to support the construction of a new clubhouse at Westport Tennis Club, based on the Newport Road, following a decision by Mayo LEADER Local Action Group.

Minister Ring, whose department oversees the LEADER Programme, said: “This is fantastic news for the town of Westport and a big step forward for the tennis club.

The clubhouse will act as a hub for members and visitors to the club. The funding announced today will ensure the continued growth and success of Westport Tennis Club for generations to come.

The project will greatly benefit the members of Westport Tennis Club, visitors to Westport who use the facility, and those who will use the clubhouse for small community meetings and activities.”

He continued: “Westport Tennis Club was established in 1954 and has grown to a current membership of almost 250 people. The club has managed a major tennis court redevelopment project in the past, and has secured finance to ensure this project is completed.

The total cost of the clubhouse project is estimated at €222,430.

The current facilities on site are not fit for purpose and hinder the group’s ability to host large competitions and community tennis events. With a new clubhouse in place, the club will be in a strong position to reach out to potential new members from the community.”

Minister Ring has now announced over €3.3 million in funding for 80 LEADER funded projects in Mayo. Nationally, over €44 million has been approved for over 1,390 LEADER projects.
