Passing of former Westport publican

THE funeral will take place today (Monday) of former Westport publican Pat Dunning.

Pat, of Cloghan Hill, Ardmore, and late of The Octagon, Westport, was a well known figure locally, operating Dunnings Pub at the Octagon for many years.

Outside of his iconic pub, Pat made his mark as a transplant recipient and after receiving a heart transplant a number of years ago he went on to compete at the World Transplant Games as part of the Irish team. His achievement was an inspiration to many.

Pat will be fondly remembered for his kindness to others and his loyalty.

Our picture, by Conor McKeown, shows Pat outside the family business in April 2017 on the occasion of the Women’s Rugby World Cup on tour in Westport.

As Conor noted when he shared the photo on Facebook: “There was always plenty of banter and Westport craic with Pat around the Octagon. He had his own great sense of humour.

He certainly liked his sport, particularly rugby, and was only delighted to get a photo with the trophy as it made its way down to Westport RFC in Carrowholly. May he rest in peace.”

Predeceased by his brother Martin, he is survived by his wife Mary, sons Jonathan, Paul, Carl, Patrick and Edward, daughter Lisa, sister Geralyn, brother Cathal, grandson David, brothers-in-law Pat, Michael and Paddy, sisters-in-law Moira, Bridie and Nóirin, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and his many friends.

His funeral will be arriving at St. Mary's Church, Westport, this morning at 11.30 a.m. for Mass at 12.30 p.m., followed by burial afterwards in Aughavale Cemetery.
