Mr. John Jordan SC

Mayo senior counsel nominated for High Court appointment

A MAYO senior counsel has been nominated by the government for appointment by the President to the High Court.

Mr. John Jordan, SC, whose practice is based at Spencer Street, Castlebar, has been put forward for the prestigious role along with Mr. Alexander Owens, SC.

The vacancies in the High Court arise following the appointment of The Hon. Ms. Justice Caroline Costello and The Hon. Ms. Justice Isobel Kennedy to the Court of Appeal in November.

The government has taken the necessary steps to formally advise President Higgins of the nominations in accordance with constitutional procedure.

A son of Mary and the late Mark Jordan, Knockthomas, Castlebar, Mr.  Jordan was educated at St. Patrick's NS and St. Gerald's College, Castlebar, before studying law.

He was the State prosecutor in the circuit court in Mayo prior to his appointment as a senior counsel in 2011. He was first appointed a junior counsel in 1985.

News of his impending appointment has been warmly welcomed in legal circles across the western region as well as in his native town, where local people are proud of his professional achievements.
