New Aldi store will create 20 jobs

AN estimated 20 new jobs will be created in Belmullet with the opening of a new Aldi store in the town.

As we reported yesterday, Mayo County Council has granted planning permission for Aldi to build a new 'Project Fresh' store in Belmullet.

Located on Tallagh Road, the new outlet will be constructed as part of Aldi’s €160m Irish store network investment programme. The store will be powered by 100% green electricity.

In a statement issued this morning, Aldi said it has received huge local support to open a store in Belmullet.

A study of local shoppers by leading independent market research agency Behaviour & Attitudes found 91% interviewed were happy to hear that Aldi was planning to open a store in the town, with 98% stating an Aldi store would mean better value grocery shopping.

Some 92% of those surveyed agreed that a local Aldi store would save them time and money. Currently, residents say they travel (on average) 31 minutes to complete their main supermarket shop - over an hour long round trip.

Commenting, Niall O’Connor, managing director, Aldi Mitchelstown Region said: “We already have stores in Castlebar, Claremorris and Ballinrobe that are hugely popular and very much part of their local community. We are now very much looking forward to opening in Belmullet as soon as possible.”
