Achill community working to deliver high-speed internet access

POSITIVE moves are taking place to deliver high-speed internet access to Achill.

Two new geohubs are planned, which will provide enhanced internet access.

Broadband is a key aim that arose from the Achill Community Futures initiative and they are now engaging with the dedicated broadband section in Mayo County Council to make it a reality.

At the end of last year, the infrastructure group of Achill Community Futures undertook a survey on internet speeds in the parish to inform broadband users of any better alternative options, depending where in the parish they were.

Results showed speeds to be very low, with no stand-out option available to suggest to people.

Through Councillor Paul McNamara, the group has met with Stephen Carolan, head of the county council's broadband section. Over the next few weeks they will be providing information on interim solutions for users while fibre broadband is being rolled out.

An update on the Achill Community Futures Facebook page set out some key points established from the meeting with the broadband section of Mayo County Council, as follows:

* Fibre broadband is now available in Currane and Tonergee areas through Eircom.

* Achill Sound Exchange is shortly available for 300k broadband.

* Work on the two geohubs planned for Achill is in progress. The geohubs will have a dedicated industrial satellite line, which will provide high speeds for users. Achill Community Futures are continuing to push to ensure these hubs are delivered, as this will be a great alternative for people to work from Achill instead of having to travel away all the time.

* Mayo County Council broadband section are very keen to work with Achill Community Futures and the parish of Achill. They are keen to use and record local knowledge (for example ducting) so the parish is ready to go once a decision on the government’s National Broadband Plan is made.
