Fresh Mayo concerns over railway station staff numbers

RENEWED concerns have been expressed over low staff numbers at railway stations in Mayo.

Senator Paddy Burke ssid the situation needed to be addressed by Irish Rail in the interest of health and safety.

He cited the example of Castlebar where there was no cover for the station manager when he is off duty.

Not only did this create a situation where no Irish Rail representative was there to assist service users, but passengers could get onto a train with a lot of booze with them and this could lead to anti-social problems.

Senator Burke called on Irish Rail to appoint train hosts to its stations as a way of resolving the issues of concern.

He added he will be raising the matter with Transport Minister Shane Ross.
