HSE responds to concerns over viability of Mayo emergency services

THE HSE West has responded to concerns being raised over the future viability of emergency services in Mayo.

In reply to issues raised in a report published by The Connaught Telegraph, the authority said emergency services at Mayo University Hospital continue to develop and expand.

The statement continued: "Over the last two years the hospital has appointed four additional consultants, including one additional consultant in emergency medicine.

"It has also advertised for another two permanent posts which will see Mayo University Hospital with four full-time permanent consultants in emergency medicine.

"The emergency department of the hospital continues to be extremely busy with the number of patients increasing every year. In 2018 over 39,000 patients attended.

"A proposal by the HSE nationally has been submitted for a modular building to provide more space at the emergency department."
