IDA facility where Meissner will be based.

Castlebar needs another IDA advance factory

MAYO County Council must move quickly to acquire the land for the next IDA advance factory in Castlebar.

That's according to Independent candidate for the Castlebar Municipal District, Harry Barrett.

While welcoming the fact Meissner are coming to Castlebar, creating much-needed employment, and that they have acquired land for expansion on the Breaffy Road, he said: “My question is, has Mayo County Council begun the process of acquiring a site for the next advance factory?

Where is the ambition for the county town? Castlebar needs at least two similar size industries to revive its manufacturing base.”

Added Mr. Barrett: “I wholeheartedly welcome the decision by Allergan to invest €63 million in its business in Ireland which will lead to the creation of 63 highly skilled roles in Westport. It proves again that biomedical and pharma related companies work in Mayo. We have a cluster of such industries that have successfully operated here for some for over 40 years.

However, councillors and Mayo County Council must be ambitious for the county town by moving to the next opportunity, by acquiring the land and lobbying the IDA to build another advance factory so that we are in pole position to move on the next opportunity that presents itself.

If elected to Mayo County Council on May 24th, it will be one of the first items on my agenda.”
