Road closures to accommodate N17 flyover

TWO road closures have been approved by councillors in Claremorris to facilitate a safety project on a dangerous N17 junction.

A new bridge is being put in place at the Lisduff junction – scene of a number of serious traffic accidents. Plans for the project, including extinguishment of two rights of way, have gone through a process of public consultation.

The closures relate to parts of county roads LS5572-0 and LS5572-1, both in the townland of Clare.

Senior engineer Conrad Harley, at a municipal district meeting, said six responses had been received following the consultation process and they had tried their best to take them on board.

It was recommended to close the roads but to defer their closure until the bridge is completed.

The council would be trying to facilitate some of the concerns raised, he added.

A further closure on another piece of road will be coming before councillors at a later date when the bridge goes to planning.

Councillor Richard Finn said the new flyover was dependent on these local road closures. They had to work in the interests of road safety.

There had been 14 accidents at the junction, Councillor Tom Connolly pointed out.

He was glad to see this proposal before them, adding that there will be further consultation.
