Mayo players celebrating their triumph.

Caldwell inspires Mayo to exhilarating victory over Armagh

GOALS in each half by Maria Reilly and Sarah Rowe, combined with a driving performance from the back by the outstanding Danielle Caldwell, helped Mayo book a place in the semi-final of the TG4 All-Ireland Ladies SFC later this month at Armagh's expense by 2-12 to 1-12.

In an exhilarating clash at Longford, Reilly's goal was the difference at half-time, Mayo leading by 1-7 to 0-7.

Armagh hit back with a goal of their nown early in the second half through Kelly Mallon, but Rowe"s strike was to prove critical.

It had looked good for the Ulster side when they claimed the lead for the first time in the 41st minute.

But it was snatched away from them by a Fiona Doherty point before Rowe's match-winner.

During an anxious finish for Mayo Caldwell got forward to grab an important point before Natasha Gaughan settled nerves with a late converted free.

Mayo face Galway or Waterford in the penultimate round at Croke Park on August 25.

Mayo scorers: S. Rowe 1-3, M. Reilly 1-0, G. Kelly 0-2, N. Gaughan, Clodagh McManamon, R. Kearns, N. Kelly, S. Cafferkey, F. Doherty and D. Caldwell 0-1 each.
