No major upsets in Mayo club championships
THERE were no major shocks in the Mayo senior, intermediate and junior A club championships over the weekend.
In the senior championship the reigning champions Ballintubber, Castlebar Mitchels, Breaffy, Ballaghaderreen, Knockmore, Davitts, Belmullet and Ballina all secured their places in the quarterfinals, as expected.
Although Ballintubber, who were missing a few of their star players, lost ot Garrymore, they had booked their place in the last eight prior to this encounter.
Castlebar had to pull out all the stops before seeing off a stern challenge from Aghamore. In the other big game Ballina defeated Westport to book their place in the quarterfinals.
Ballaghaderreen defeated Belmullet in a game to decide who topped their group, while Knockmore overcame Hollymount/Carramore to make the last eight.
Breaffy were very much on song with their big win over Moy Davitts, while Davitts gained their quarterfinal place following their deserved victory over Kiltane.
In the intermediate championship Ballyhaunis got the better of Mayo Gaels to advance to the quarterfinals where they will be joined by The Neale, Parke, Louisburgh, Kiltimagh, Ardnaree, Crossmolina and Burrishoole.
Three of the four Mayo junior A championship quarterfinals were decided today (Sunday) with Castlebar B, Kilmeena and Ardagh all good victories.
Castlebar B proved too strong for Kilmovee Shamrocks, while Ardagh defeated Ballintubber B in a close encounter played in Swinford.
In what was the big game in the junior grade, Kilmeena recorded a fully deserved win over Cill Chomain in Knockmore.
The west Mayo were full value for their win and on the evidence of this performance they will take a lot of beating.
The four quarterfinal between Kilmaine and Westport B was postponed and will be played at a later date.
