Minister Ring to launch Newport 300 celebrations

THE Minister for Rural and Community Development, will this evening officially launch the Newport 300 celebrations which will take place next year.

Speaking ahead of this evening’s event in Newport, Minister Ring said: “From the first few houses built in 1720, Newport has come a long way through many turbulent and difficult times.

“It is amazing to think that next year the town will celebrate its 300th anniversary and the community has plans for fantastic events throughout the year to celebrate this milestone.

“Newport’s strategic location on the coast line, and at the mouth of the river which gave access to 18th century ships, was an instrumental factor in Captain Pratt’s decision to locate this town here.

“Since its establishment three centuries ago, Newport continued to grow and prosper. That was the case until the Famine which left a shattered community, emigration and starvation as was the case throughout this Island.

“But the resilience of the people overcame that disaster to ensure the survival of the town. Next year’s celebrations will be testament to that but we should never forget that time in our country’s history.

“Newport’s celebrations will take place at a positive and optimistic time in the town’s history. It has the wonderful Greenway, Burrishoole Abbey, Carrickahowley Castle, the Wild Atlantic Way, superb angling and a busy cultural and heritage scene.

“I have no doubt the town will continue to thrive over the next 300 years and beyond!

“I am glad to have been able, in my capacity as Minister, to support important investments to support the development of the town.

"I and my department will continue to provide opportunities for communities in our towns and villages, such as Newport, to ensure they thrive and prosper into the future.”
