Concerns raised for safety of school children at busy Mayo junction

A Mayo parent has raised concerns for school children crossing the street at the pedestrian lights at Newtown in Castlebar.

She is to outline her reservations to Mayo County Council following a very worrying incident at the location earlier today.

She stated: “This morning the light is low. A car broke the pedestrian lights at Chapel Street/Newtown junction and nearly ran into our six year old when he had been a good boy and had waited for the little man to turn green.

“The pedestrian lights stay green for such a short time at this junction. My husband reckons about 9.9 seconds.

“Along with many other families bringing kids to school, we always have to run across this busy and dangerous junction. We always wait for pedestrian green lights.”

The parent took the opportunity to ask motorists to take care while driving in these low light winter conditions.

“It makes you think twice about making changes to 'daylight saving time'.

"Is it wise or safe to make winter mornings even darker and even less visible and even more dangerous?”
