Lack of courtesy at garda checkpoints highlighted

SENIOR gardaí in Mayo have been told of a lack of courtesy some members of the public have experienced when being breathalysed at checkpoints by some members of the force.

The matter was raised by Deputy Dara Calleary at a Mayo Joint Policing Committee meeting who said this was the feedback he has received from the public.

Checkpoints need to be done but there needs to be reasonableness.

Councillor Michael Burke agreed people needed to be treated with the utmost courtesy, for the gardai to stay connected with the public, which was very important.

Supt. Joe McKenna was 'disappointed' to hear of a lack of courtesy at checkpoints. The issue would be brought back to all members and he would be circulating a memo.
