'Sting in the tail' from Storm Brendan is flagged in Mayo

THE director of environmental services for Mayo County Council is not ruling out 'a string in the tail' from Storm Brendan.

Speaking to Midwest Radio, Martin Keating said the high winds have abated over the past hour but they are expected to pick up again later.

“We are remaining on the alert in the event of a string in the tail,” he stated.

The highest winds speeds recorded in Mayo today were 111 kms. per hour in Belmullet and 110 kms. per hour in Newport.

A number of trees are down in the Claremorris, Balla and Kiltimagh areas.

The R313 between Belmullet and Blacksod will remains closed until an accessment is conducted of tidal actions at the location..

High tide levels are expected to be lower than this morning along Mayo coastal areas, reducing the threat of flooding, he added.
