Gardaí investigating theft of traffic counter

GARDAÍ in Ballina are investigating after a traffic counter valued €2,300 was taken from Rathduff, on the Corroy to Rathbaun Road, Ballina, sometime between January 15 and 22.

The incident was reported to the gardaí by Mayo County Council.

The traffic counter is a grey box, which was secured to a telegraph pole approximately 100 metres east of the Carrowmore junction on the Corroy to Rathbaun Road.

The device is known as a traffic detection device and is manufactured by Sierzega.

A council spokesperson said they do not know why anybody would be interested in the traffic counter as it has a very specific use.

However, Mayo County Council is interested in getting it back.

This piece of equipment is used to obtain invaluable traffic information on accident prone sites on the road network.
