Council to debate public concerns over 'notorious' Mayo rail crossing

AN elected member of Mayo County Council has called for urgent action on the controversial rail level crossing at Kilnageer, Breaffy.

Councillor Cyril Burke has tabled at motion for the next meeting of the Castlebar Municipal District.

His motion calls on Irish Rail "to erect automated barriers at the location for the safety of all concerned but most of all the general public who cross the lines by all modes of transport including cyclists and pedestrians.”

Councillor Burke said Irish Rail cannot continue to reject the calls of local residents for the automated system in view of another accident taking at the crossing last week in which a motorist had a miraculous escape.

“This crossing is notoriously dangerous and it's time for action to be taken,” he added.

The level crossing at Kilnageer is one of the most dangerous in the country, according to an independent study conducted a number of years ago.
