Proposal to create west Mayo economic growth cluster progresses

A REPORT on the Castlebar-Westport economic growth cluster is being progressed by Mayo County Council.

The two towns do not currently offer a scale of economic destiny to represent a national growth centre.

The report's recommendation of a ‘Cluster 2040 model’ is designed not to detract from the uniqueness of the two locations but 'to capitalise on the synergies that exist and can develop'.

The development of the N5 acted as the impetus for the study and, embracing a shared vision combined with a long-term commitment to a work schedule, the proposal will become 'the most important enabler of success'.

The strategic approach recommended within the report sets out a clear road map to achieve an economic growth cluster and Mayo County Council is to adopt a leadership role in developing the model over the coming years.

This will include a town plan and retail strategy process for Castlebar and Westport to be developed simutaneously.

“It's potential to create one of the most desirable places to live, work and invest is evident.

“Equally it can address the challenges of regional development and a viable counter option to the east coast,” the report added.
