Community anger over historic Mayo site being used as a drinking den

A 15th century monastic site in east Mayo is being used as a drinking den, much to the anger of the local community.

Gardaì have received complaints over the disgraceful condition in which the historic Urlaur Abbey is being left following alcohol parties.

The graveyard at the scenic location has been littered with bottles while broken glass is scattered in the grass where small children walk.

Local woman Sarah Grennan has highlighted the scene with photographs on her Facebook page before a clean-up took place earlier this week.

She said it is a shame to see the state in which the abbey grounds are left by groups who come from outside the area for their drinking parties and leave all their rubbish after them.

"It's a disgrace and must be stopped.

"Not only is this a public space for people to enjoy, but it is also a cemetery, which should never be disrespected in this way.

"Those responsible are travelling from more that 5km away for these parties.

"The gardaì are aware of our concerns and have called out to the scene."

A clean-up was carried out this week with several bags of rubbish collected, albeit one volunteer getting cut by broken glass in the process.

Local people remain concerned about the situation and have called for urgent action to protect their historic site.
