Mayo ammunitions find described as 'frightening' and 'sinister'

THE cathaoirleach of Ballina Municipal District has said it was frightening to hear of ammunition being found in a drugs raid in the locality.

Councillor Michael Loftus said a recent raid of eight places between Attymass and Ballina which yielded around €330,000 worth of drugs was to be welcomed as it highlighted the great job gardaí were doing in dealing with the scourge of drugs.

But he was worried that the ammunitions find could be 'sinister'.

The great work of gardaí in dealing with drugs was to be complimented, agreed Councillor Mark Duffy, who also noted that community gardaí have been doing a terrific job for the most vulnerable people during the Covid-19 pandemic.

One of the unintended consequences of the pandemic was that gardaí were conducting more checkpoints that could be bringing in more information, said Councillor Jarlath Munnelly.

“It's tragic on one hand but it's great to see gardaí on top of the drugs issue and winning the battle.”
