Death of popular Mayo personality in road accident is widely mourned
A man in his seventies has died from injuries sustained in a road traffic accident on the N5 between Castlebar and Turlough yesterday.
He has been named locally as Chris Culkeen (72), McHale Road, Castlebar.
The car which he was driving collided with a truck near Windsor at around 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Mr. Culkeen was taken by ambulance to Mayo University Hospital where he passed away this afternoon.
The deceased, a native of Greenwood, Ballyhaunis, was widely known and respected in Mayo GAA circles and was held in high regard in the community at large.
He is survived by his wife Kathleen, son Alan, daughter Chrystal, sisters, relatives, neighbours and friends, to whom heartfelt sympathy is tendered.
The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
