Rail representative to attend meeting to discuss Breaffy crossing

THE controversial rail crossing at Kilnageer, Breaffy, is set to get another airing at next week's Castlebar Municipal District meeting.

The agenda includes an item to hear from a representative of Iarnrod Éireann regarding the crossing.

A local delegation addressed the May meeting where councillors fully supported their campaign to have automated gates at the railway crossing.

Councillors requested that Irish Rail attend a meeting with them and the rail company has agreed to attend next Wednesday's local area meeting.

An advance train warning system with amber and red lights installed by the company is causing confusion at the location.

The crossing also involves the opening and closing of two gates, and has been the scene of numerous accidents.

An automatic barrier system is the preferred option of locals.

Mayo County Council previously granted planning permission for a bridge at the location. That permission has now lapsed.
