Go-ahead for renewable energy project in Claremorris

PLANNERS have given the go-ahead for a renewable energy project in Claremorris.

Claremorris & Western District Energy Co-Op are behind the development, to be located at Streamstown, Claremorris.

It will consist of a solar photovoltaic (pv) panel array consisting of up to 34,352sqm pv panels on ground mounted steel frames, five electricity control cabins containing five . inverter units, cable ducts, hardstanding area, boundary security fence, site entrance, access track, landscaping, CCTV, and ancillary site works.

Documents submitted to Mayo County Council explain that the facility will generate 5.4 MW of renewable electricity once the site becomes fully operational. This will then be exported to the national grid.

The lands for the project are currently used as pasture. The site area itself is 27.8 acres and it was chosen for its southerly aspect, relatively flat contours, and the potential to provide a nearby connection to the national grid.

Claremorris and Western District Energy Co-Op was established to develop the benefits of community owned renewable energy, supporting communities and addressing climate change in the west of Ireland.
