Call for River Moy bridge to be named in honour of Jack Charlton

An independent member of Mayo County Council has called for a bridge over the River Moy to be named in honour of the late Jack Charlton.

Councillor Mark Duffy said Jack Charlton fished the Ridgepool in Ballina and was an adopted son of Ballina and Ireland.

"The footbridge in Ballina overIooks the Ridgepool as Jack himself did in his days fishing there.

"Perhaps it would be a fitting tribute to name the bridge after Jack to mark the legacy he has left behind for Ireland.

"If the bridge is to be named, it would be appropriate to name it 'The Jack Charlton Bridge' if the Charlton family would agree to it."

Councillor Duffy is expected to raise the matter at Monday's meeting of the council in the TF Royal Theatre, Castlebar.
