Ballyheane joins forces to support Mayo Mental Health

BALLYHEANE Community Council, in conjunction with Mayo Mental Health Association and supported by Ballyheane AFC, are launching their very first 10k walk/run on Monday, August 3.

Ballyheane Community Council felt that facilities within the village were limited for outdoor exercise, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.

Both mental and physical health is of huge importance but the community’s safety is paramount.

The 10k will start at the grounds of Ballyheane Community Centre and will proceed through townlands surrounding Ballyheane village. The loop terrain will start from flat to minor hills that offer a quiet and tranquil route to be enjoyed by all physical abilities.

Mayo Mental Health Association was chosen as charity partner this year as they are celebrating their 50th anniversary. They provide a vital service to all communities such as their information centre, 2 New Antrim Street, Castlebar, social housing for people experiencing mental health difficulties, extensive schools education programmes and health promotion activities throughout Mayo.

Niall Dunne, manager of Mayo Mental Health Association, said: “We were delighted to be asked by Ballyheane Community Council to be the charity partner for this wonderful community event.

“It will be a great way of creating supportive environments and strengthening community action to promote positive mental health and wellbeing.

“Physical activity and community engagement are some of the ways of improving our mental health and gaining new support mechanisms within our community. We will be delighted to support this initiative.”

As it is the first 10k activity since the lifting of restrictions, there will be limited spaces due to government guidelines. We would encourage families, clubs and single participants to come join us on the bank holiday weekend, Monday, August 3, and make this a positive event to remember.

All protocols surrounding Covid-19 will be adhered to and we will envisage this being an extremely popular event into the future.

Tickets and further information can be sought through www.eventbrite.ie where you can book your places. You can do this very simply by going to Eventbrite, searching for Ballyheane 10k, choose your selected ticket(s), entering your details and you will receive email confirmation. Either your electronic ticket or your printed hard copy will be required on the day.

Thanks to all the local businesses and sponsors for their continued support to Ballyheane Community Council.
