Mayo TD elected to key Fine Gael party role

Mayo TD Alan Dillon has been elected to the position of secretary of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party.

Deputy Dillon was elected at the annual general meeting of the Fine Gael parliamentary party in Leinster House last night.

The parliamentary party is the collective group of all Fine Gael TDs, Senators and MEPs and plays a central role in developing and guiding Fine Gael’s national policies and strategies.

Recent former secretaries included current Justice Minister Helen McEntee and Higher Education and Science Minister, Simon Harris.

Deputy Dillon said: “It is an enormous honour to be elected to a leadership position within the Fine Gael parliamentary party.

“Since my election to Dáil Éireann in February, I have been meeting with as many government ministers and colleagues to progress the interests of Mayo and promote balanced regional development.

“The parliamentary party plays a key role in significant decisions on the approach taken by Fine Gael and I am excited to work in a central role on the executive.

“I appreciate the trust placed in me by my parliamentary colleagues and look forward to working with the incoming chairperson of Richard Bruton.”
